When I was a child I dreamt of such food: such feasts. There was no religion for me back then. There were no local politics. Only Food. Only tasty, amazing food. Now I find such innocence in my world another time: - Where Food reigns, yet again, supreme. How can I not embrace and cheer, the dozens of spectacular local dishes that come out of this kitchen.
The food is delicious, a lot of variety and cheap too. Their service is top notch which is rare here. I was staying at the nearby hotel and ended up eating there 2 times in a row. I chose at least 4 different dishes each time and I'm yet to eat same dish. Each of them is delicious. The website said the restaurant open at 11am but I don't think it's accurate. I arrived at 10:50am and there's a line and the place is almost full. Come early and enjoy the variety of food.
Hjh Maimunah Restaurant Joo Chiat Location... even you are like across town where we live, my mother and I will always go here after we had our fair share of grocery shopping at Geylang Serai Market. Most of the time, my Mother purchased TO GO items, unless she has the mood to dine in at this location. I did not know this location exists until I came back last year. This is their 2nd Location. Their Original Location is still situated at Lorong Pisang. That Lorong Pisang location, is their 1st and it is located in the Kampong Glam district / neighborhood. One of our favorites are the Sambal Goreng Pengantin, which is indeed labor intensive to prepare this dish and NOT so many establishments in town do it right. This recent visit was on a Tuesday afternoon, with fellow Yelper, Heather T - who never had Sedut Siput Lemak, so to Hjh Maimunah Restaurant - Joo Chiat Location we went. Even after Lunch hours, this establishment always have LONG Lines, be it patrons, having their meals in the establishments or purchase to go items for their families or their Dinner at work. Another time consuming, to cook and to eat are these tiny siput sedut in Bahasa Melayu. The Scientific name for this sea snails is Cerithidea Obtusa. Another dish, how my late Grandma and my late Aunt made, whenever they are able to purchase LIVE Sea Snails from the Geylang Serai Wet Market. All in all, we are willing to commute to this location to have a feast or purchase TO GO items. The pricing can adds up after each meal. Oh well. As long as my Mother or my friends are happy. I am happy.
When in Singapore this is definite must go to place! I've been several times and never disappointed in these Indonesian flavorful dishes! Spicy which I love with a blend of other exotic flavors! This time around I indulged in Stingray, Tempe, Rendang Beef and Tripe. If you have a "worldly palate" you will enjoy!
Always long queue! Always here for the siput! Many variety of dishes to choose from! They also have mee soup, laksa etc. Extremely crowded on weekends. Worth coming by though for nasi padang! Too much too choose from!
Just tried this restaurant for the first time. Came for dinner and order an individual portion; Curry fish, tofu with Long beans and lots of sambal Chilli. My verdict. Thumbs up for the authentic taste, big portion and Chilli. Cost S$5.60. Worth it for the whole slice of batang(king mackerel), mind you, not half a slice. Lots of yummy gravy if you request. Will be returning very soon!
Five Stars for Hajah Maimunah Restaurant! This restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes from fresh fish, to fish roe, to stewed meats to curry snails, to chicken curry. Get it all! One of my hotel concierge staff told me about this restaurant. He swore that they have the best chicken curry in town. They did! You walk into the place and you'll find a display cabinet with about 35+ different types of dishes. You pick and choose what you want and you're off to the cashier - like a cafeteria style dining. There is a lot of seating downstairs and upstairs. Everyone seemed to be super friendly and many families came here to enjoy a meal. Fish Roe - my first dish was a fish roe steamed / boiled in some kind of red sauce. It was fun to eat and tasty. Chicken Curry - one of the better dishes here. Two generous portions of chicken cooked in a coconut milk yellow curry sauce. Yum! Intestine Stew - Not sure what I was eating, but it was delicious. It was (beef?) heart, liver, intestines, kidney pieces all thrown together in a tomato based stew. Snails with yellow coconut curry - best thing of the day! The snails were about 40 to an order. The tops were cut off so you sucked the snails right out of the shell. Tasted like sweet yellow curry sauce. Delicious! I really enjoyed my experience here. I'll be back during my next visit to Singapore!
It's been featured on Anthony Bourdain's TV show, so you can be sure this restaurant has the goods to deliver. Hajah Maimunah Restaurant offers an unbelievable selection of authentic Malay fare at affordable prices (if you share). Prices can be steep if you dine alone. This branch spans two floors, but is always crowded during lunch hours. I've only been here with family, once to celebrate a birthday and other times for gatherings. You can't dine in often if you're health conscious because the food served is rich and sinful. We love the tender beef rendang - the dish is so full of lemak. Plenty of other dishes include insane amounts of coconut milk. I'm not a fan of seafood, but my family members are crazy over their siput sedot ( small sea snails in rich coconut curry gravy ). And don't forget to order that tahu telor. If you haven't stuffed yourself silly, then head to the dessert corner to grab deep-fried snacks or Malay kueh. I wouldn't encourage you too do so, since it's not much different from any hawker stall. We usually don't do get desserts, the mains are enough for us!
